HERNAN ROMERO Band
Guitarist/Composer/Producer/Band
Leader
Argentina/Spain
BIOGRAPHY
One
of the greatest guitarists of international jazz that has imbued classical jazz
and latin with gypsy flamenco, the musical traditions of the Middle East and
the Mediterranean. A close collaborator of Al Di Meola for many years, he
transforms flamenco’s passion to absolute jazz enjoyment
Spiced with the exotic traditions that infuse
flamenco-gypsy, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean folk interwoven with textures
of classical, jazz, and Latin rhythms, composer and guitarist Hernan Romero's
music is both sophisticated and accessible. It is sensuous, passionate,
romantic and inescapably infectious. Inspired by the music of his family from
his earliest memory, Romero became part of their performing ensemble by the age
of four. Romero's mother, popular International singer Estela Raval,
contributed to this by surrounding young Romero with the best of musical
environments. Born in Argentina, Romero became strongly
influenced by the Flamenco style when his family moved to Cadiz in Andalusia, Spain; receiving classical
guitar training from Roberto Lara, one of Andres Segovia's disciples. In 1986 Romero
moved to New York. While teaching
classical guitar in the music program at FiveTownsCollege in Long Island, Romero continued his
education, receiving a Masters in Composition and Orchestration from the
Manhattan School of Music. Playing in jazz clubs around town, Romero was soon
working with some of world's finest guitarists, including Al Di Meola, Paco De
Lucia and John McLaughlin. In 1990, Romero produced and played on Di Meola
Plays Piazzola, beginning a fertile association with Di Meola that resulted in
nine other albums, including Orange and Blue (Rhino Records,
1994), and The Infinite Desire (Telarc, 1998). Romero's compositions for Live
at TrinityChurch present intense and
evocative music complimented by a lyrical style which is sure to influence
aspiring guitarists for generations to come. The impassioned strains of
Romero's virtuosity, both as a guitarist and composer, offer listeners a
vibrant and exhilarating sound. Romero's Un Segundo Una Vida brought his
flamenco and Latin-based jazz to new realms with the addition of more complex
orchestration and additional instrumentation; including the melodic strings of
a chamber orchestra, and a wide array of penetrating vocals. Romero's CD,
Duende, hit number 6 on the Billboard charts (World Music). Now his latest CD
3 Caras de unaMoneda is a must have!!! The production features Grammy awarded
Estela Raval (hernan's mother), AL DI MEOLA on the composition GUITANGO, and
JERRY MAROTTA from Peter Gabriel's band and many more.
While Romero continues to captivate audiences in New York City clubs and on tour
throughout the world his composing and performing skills as a collaborator
remain in high demand. PRESS
If Al DiMeola symbolized the electric/acoustic
guitars major impact on the American public during his days with Chick Corea,
Stanley Clarke and Lenny White in the group called Return To Forever, then his
long-time collaborator and producer Hernan Romero symbolizes its creative
achievements among the Latin American and Spanish populations. With DUENDE, the
world-class guitarist captivates and mesmerizes his listeners with fiery
flamenco rhythms and the essence of the Spanish tango andaluz. Each rhythmic
guitar phrase echoes a distinctive concept in modern flamenco music that
literally welcomes you into its beautiful chord patterns. In addition to
pleasing your sense of improvisation, Romero beckons you to enjoy the
counterpoint of his vocals and that of the accompanying percussionists. Ten
great songs express Romeros exceptional talents but it is Duende that takes
hold of you and doesnt let go. This composition, with its energetic beat,
rhythmic handclaps and chord variations tantalize the romantic senses onto
another level. The set closes with his exciting flamenco mastery accompanied by
a rhapsodic string section on Concierto de Guitarra a un Viajero. Here he
shows his mastery of fiery flamenco chords and romantic world rhythms. DUENDE
is artistically beautiful, sensual and contains the kind of songs that keep the
romantic heart on fire! ‘Music Reviews’ Drawing from a multitude of musical influences to
create a unique flamenco/ world music sound, guitarist and composer Hernan
Romero astounds on this collection of instrumental and Spanish-language tracks.
The Argentinean-born Romero, who recently recorded with Alicia Keys and
saxophonist Chico Freeman, adds elements of jazz and classical music to the
flamenco, Middle Eastern, Latin, and Mediterranean influences more readily
apparent in his unique style. The 11pristine recordings that comprise Un Segundo Una Vida include
such standout tracks as "Otro Atardecer," on which the guitarist
duets with himself, playing complementary and supportive guitar lines panned
left and right; "La Vida Nueva," featuring Romero's mother, singer
Estela Raval; "Puerto Esperanza," a classically tinged, high-energy
performance; and the title track. With this much talent and technical ability,
it's surprising that Romero isn't a household name, outside of admirers and
collaborators like Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Freeman. Un Segundo Una
Vida could change that.‘El Pays’

Bassist/composer/Producer/
Artistic
Director of the Red Sea Festival
Israel
BIOGRAPHY
Jazz
is now moving into a great era. After many years of opposition between
traditionalists and modern jazz proponents, fans are now discovering a new
approach to the genre which gives priority to mixing, intermingling, swing and
the pure pleasure of music.
Pleasure
is certainly one of the driving forces behind the work of Avishai Cohen – that
together with an insatiable desire to share his passion for jazz with his
audiences. There have been too few musicians throughout the history of jazz who
were able to create a direct bond between their instruments and the audience.
But with his talent and energy Cohen is able to summon the perfect ambiance in
a matter of seconds, moving listeners with just three notes and bring joy to
the hearts of all who come to see him perform. Constantly raising artistic
standards, he has been able to weave this solid but invisible link throughout
his career. It is this link that touches the listener deeply and makes a jazz
artist a star. The phenomenon that is Avishai Cohen now unites spirits well
beyond the borders of jazz. Having moved outside any clearly defined
categories, Avishai electrifies the audience at each performance. And now,
already enjoying a well-deserved reputation as a gifted and imaginative composer
and one of the best living bass players, Cohen reveals himself to be a talented
singer as well.
Avishai
Cohen was born in 1970 in Israel to a musical family. As
a child he began learning piano, but switched to electric bass guitar after
discovering the legendary Jaco Pastorius. When he set off from Tel Aviv to
conquer the world after two years of service in the army band, New York was a logical first
destination. But the young Israeli had a difficult first year, at times even
working in construction to make ends meet. Then came the Latin bands. A child
of the Middle
East,
already well acquainted with a typical rhythm sections, Cohen could soon be
found playing alongside Panamanian artist Danilo Perez on the Latin borders of
today’s jazz. It was around this time that he formed his first group, an
orchestra with multiple influences that found an admirer in a certain Chick
Corea, who soon offered him a record deal under his own label Stretch as well
as the bass chair in his new group.
This
would be the beginning of Corea’s sextet Origin – a rejuvenating new project
for Corea and the best of training grounds for Cohen. This group took the young
artist to the best stages around the world. During this period he acquired
discipline, expertise and control and learned how to bond with an audience. He
also sharpened his skills as a composer and gained an intimate rapport with
melody. Avishai was soon in very high demand, accompanying artists such as,
Bobby McFerrin, among many others, and performing with the London, Israel Philharmonic
Orchestras and the Boston Pops Symphony.
After
releasing four albums under his mentor’s label and acquiring international
renown, Avishai decided to take the plunge and launch a solo career. Cohen
created his own label during 2003 Razdaz Recordz and began exploring new
directions that interested him. For seven years he has dedicated himself to
forging his own path, never refusing an invitation to perform. Step by step,
concert after concert, Avishai has succeeded in building a strong network and
an intimate bond with his music and fans.
Avishai
Cohen remains a composer above all. Over the years his exploration of his
roots, his history and the blending of his influences has become deeper, denser
and more moving. Returning to Tel Aviv, he surrounded himself with several
choice associates. He now works closely with lifelong friends and young artists
ready to go anywhere he will take them. Amos Hoffman’s oud, Itamar Doari’s
creative percussion, Shai Maestro’s delicate touch and Karen Malka’s unique
vocals create fertile soil for countless possibilities.
With
the latest new album Aurora, his 11th release,
Avishai Cohen has reached a certain essence of expression, using voice as a
direct and powerful vehicle for his emotions. Singing – in Hebrew, English,
Spanish and Ladino. The music draws its source in the earth of his home
country, at the crossroads of many cultures. Arab-Andalusian and Hebraic, it
tells the story of Bedouins of the desert and speaks of life, love, youth and
freedom.
Jazz naturally remains at the heart of this original universe – the ideal
meeting place for all kinds of encounters.. Aurora is a work of synergy under
the Blue Note label, which for years seems to have been at the centre of all
futures in jazz, of which Avishai Cohen is undeniably the most modern and
irresistible standard-bearer.
